Liverpool’s victory over Spartak Moscow in the Champions League on Wednesday evening confirmed our passage into the Last 16 for the first time since 2009.
Back then, a team managed by Rafa Benitez annihilated Real Madrid, before losing to Chelsea in a classic quarterfinal. Liverpool had won the Champions League in 2005 and had made the final in 2007, so were utterly used to playing in the latter stages of Europe’s premier club competition – but in Champions League terms – it’s been barren ever since.
The 7-0 thrashing of Spartak under Jurgen Klopp though gave Reds hope that we’re back in the big time. No English side has ever scored more group stage goals than Liverpool this season, who racked up a mind-boggling 23, thanks to arguably the best front four in world football right now: Mo Salah, Coutinho, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane.
On December 11 though, we’ll find out who we’re playing in the next round, so it’s a good chance to check out the best Champions League Betting Odds before we pull a big name out of the hat!
The draw is at 11am, and the football world will be watching.
Having won the group, the sides we can face are: Basel, Shakhtar, Bayern Munich, Juventus, Porto or Real Madrid.
