Jan Oblak was invited to Liverpool & shown Melwood… But injury scuppered deal

This looks like another ‘One that got away’ moment, like when we went for Harry Kewell over Cristiano Ronaldo and refused to stump up for Dani Alves…

In 2009, Liverpool invited Slovenian teenager Jan Oblak to Melwood when he was contracted to Olimpija, showing him the first-team training ground and the Academy set-up at Kirby – also inviting him to a match versus Arsenal as well.

Slovenian media outlet Dnevik reported at the time that Oblak’s trial was cut short due to a minor injury and that he’d instead return in January to play a game for the U18s.

This never happened though and Oblak ended up at Benfica in 2010, who watched him develop and eventually sold him to Atletico Madrid in 2014, where he’s become one of the very best in the world.

Now aged 25, Oblak is wanted by Liverpool again, but he’ll be significantly more expensive…

The elite ‘keeper has an £89m release-clause, and it’s very unlikely Atletico will sell for less than this.

Will Liverpool more than double the world record for the most expensive keeper?

We hope so!

(Although it would have been nice if Oblak had been on the books since 2009, really!
