Lovren: I help Virgil van Dijk

Dejan Lovren has spoken in glowing terms about his new centre-back partner Virgil van Dijk.

The Dutch giant arrived from Southampton for £75m at the beginning of January and after a slow start, has put in consecutively imperious performances against first his old club and then FC Porto in the Champions League.

Lovren, often maligned by Liverpool fans, has been decent when deployed alongside him, although Jurgen Klopp has actually used Joel Matip four times and the Croat just twice.

In the two appearances with Lovren though, Liverpool’s defence has looked significantly more stable.

“To be honest I didn’t expect that we would be so quick [to settle] together,” Lovren told Sky Sports. “But when you are a top centre-back I think it is normal and Virgil is one of them.

“Of course he needs some time to adapt because Southampton to Liverpool is different but he understands what the manager wants – although sometimes I have to remind him also.

“I help him as much as I know. It is a difficult period sometimes to adapt but he is managing it quite well.

“Everyone is behind him and giving him support.”

Van Dijk’s recent form has us very excited, actually. But the manner in which he seems to have improved Lovren alongside him is also quite promising.

Next to the new signing, Lovren’s positioning and composure seems to have got better, largely thanks his partner’s marshalling.

As a result, we’d like to see these two get a run of games together from now until the business end of the season.
