Apart from finding a top class replacement of Philippe Coutinho, one major area where Liverpool should be looking to invest in the summer is the central defence.
Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool are a free-flowing attacking side and are a joy to watch when the front three gets going, but time and again we have seen how vulnerable their defence can be. This makes betting on Liverpool like experiencing a rollercoaster ride, although if you have read this Betstars review you’ll see how being smart with your bets can help you not lose all your money.
This is a side that have conceded 22 goals away from home, and 32 overall in the Premier League. And despite smashing the transfer record to bring Virgil van Dijk in the January window, the problem still persists.
While the Dutch defender is a top-class player, he needs another quality centre-back alongside him to forge a strong defensive partnership. The likes of Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren can at best serve as good squad players. If Liverpool are to challenge for titles on all fronts they need far better defenders than that.
Toby Alderweireld (Tottenham Hotspur)
The Belgium defender has reportedly rejected Tottenham’s latest contract offer, and the north London club are ready to let him go in the summer.
The 28-year-old is arguably one of the best defenders in the Premier League and would be a massive addition to the Liverpool squad.
Spurs could be willing to sell him at a high price now rather than wait till the end of the window when he can leave for £25 million, due to certain strange clauses in his contract.
The Reds have money burning a hole in their pocket following the departure of Philippe Coutinho and should look to utilise it on luring Alderweireld to Anfield.
Stefan De Vrij (Lazio)
Another quality defender who has been on Liverpool’s radar for a while. The Lazio defender’s contract will expire in the summer and the 26-year-old has refused to sign a new deal with the Serie A club.
Lazio have confirmed that there will be no further negotiation with the player which suggests they are bracing themselves for offers from top clubs around Europe.
De Vrij has played with Van Dijk for the Dutch national team, and the Reds should try to recreate that partnership at the club level as well.
Kalidou Koulibaly (Napoli)
The 26-year-old Senegal international has progressed immensely in recent years since he joined Napoli in 2014.
He is tall, powerful, and quick and is very good at making tackles and clearances. At the same time, he is good at reading the game and makes fine interceptions as well.
His impressive 91.4% passing accuracy shows that he is with the ball on his feet as well. He is highly rated by the Napoli hierarchy and would be a fantastic addition for Liverpool.
