Liverpool fans furious after ominous injury setback

Reds have reacted angrily to yet another injury setback for a Liverpool player during the dreaded international break.

Joe Gomez limped off inside 10 minutes of England’s friendly against the Netherlands after injuring his left ankle during an aerial challenge.

He was subsequently replaced by Leicester City’s Harry Maguire, who went on to flourish as Gareth Southgate’s men impressed with an accomplished performance in Amsterdam.

It marked a cruel hindrance to Gomez in his efforts to shine as part of a central defensive trio alongside Kyle Walker and John Stones and further his claim for a World Cup spot.

The Liverpool man has warranted his place in contention for an England starting role with a superb season at club level, filling in admirably at right-back during Nathaniel Clyne’s lengthy injury absence.

There will now be worries over his availability for a string of vital upcoming matches, including April’s Champions League quarter-final clash with Manchester City.

Gomez will now undergo tests to determine the extent of his issue, but his immediate grimace in the aftermath suggested there could be reason for concern.

Ligament damage has emerged as a possibility given the nature of the challenge, although both England and Liverpool are yet to shed light on details.

Here’s how frustrated fans reacted to an all-too familiar theme of the international break…
