Brilliant: New Champions League rules benefit Liverpool hugely

Posted by

If Liverpool finish fourth in the Premier League this season, we won’t have to get through a qualifying round to reach the Champions League Group Stages, but instead, enter them automatically.

This has been confirmed by UEFA, reported by the Echo, who’ve named the 26 teams who automatically qualify:

UEFA Champions League holders (1)
UEFA Europa League holders (1)
Top four from associations ranked 1st to 4th: Spain, Germany, England, Italy (16)
Top two from associations ranked 5th and 6th: France, Russia (4)
Champions of associations ranked 7th to 10th: Portugal, Ukraine, Belgium, Turkey (4)

Now, the Premier League sides must continue to do well, as if England drop out of the top four associations, we’ll be in trouble!

But for now, this is good news, especially considering our current league position.

We’re guaranteed the top four if we win two of our remaining four games, but that’s assuming Chelsea win all their fixtures.

It looks all but wrapped up, but we can’t take anything for granted, especially with our crunch Champions League ties with AS Roma coming up.

We host the Italians next Tuesday, before heading to Italy for the crunch reverse fixture in Rome.
