Laurens: Klopp talks with Rabiot ‘positive’; January deal possible

Posted by

Julian Laurens, the journalist who originally broke the news of our interest in Adrien Rabiot, has discussed the potential future transfer in further detail.

The guys at The Anfield Wrap did excellently to get him on, and you can listen to their podcast with the French football expert, here – and sign up to the rest of their services, too.

According to Laurens, initial talks between Jurgen Klopp and the France international have gone well, with it possible we could sign Rabiot either in January or at the end of the season, circumstance depending.

“I think it was quite positive,” Laurens said, when asked about the discussion. “I don’t think it was the first time Rabiot’s men were speaking from people from the club…

“The interest has always been there…

“You can see a bit of similarity with the Keita deal, trying to get a pre-agreement, that would be signed in January, for example, for him to sign for Liverpool in the summer.

“Or maybe [they can] find an agreement an early as January…

“If the season goes as well as Liverpool expect, which is very well, and Klopp feels he doesn’t really need another midfielder – because it’s a position Liverpool already have a lot of talented players – you try to get him for the following season. However, if things aren’t going as expected, and there’s a couple of injuries or players in poor form, the idea would be to try and get a deal done in January for what would be a low fee for a player like Rabiot.”

We showed with our mid-term purchase of Virgil van Dijk last season that the January window can be exploited to our benefit.

It’s our belief that the centre of our park does actually still lack some guile and creativity, especially when Naby Keita isn’t included, and we’d welcome Rabiot with open arms.

He’s the perfect age and if Klopp rates him very highly, the 23-year-old is almost definitely excellent.
