We’ve yet to face Watford, but last season battered them 6-0 at Anfield, following the Opening Day 3-3 draw at Vicarage Road.

Van Dijk wasn’t our player for the away tie, but marshalled the defence as Mo Salah notched four.

“I always think Van Dijk is the best around,” Deeney told a BBC Radio5Live podcast.

“I said it this year; I said it last year. Because he is a nightmare for someone like me. He’s 6’4″, I think, and I’m just about 6′. He’s big, he’s strong, he’s fast. He can play. And he doesn’t mind, you know, getting physical as well, so if someone like me gets him it’s a nightmare. I always think before that I’m going to have to be playing the best of my career if I’m to get even anything out of him.”

It’s a testament to just how brilliant van Dijk has been since he arrived at Anfield that nobody is talking about the monstrous £75m fee we had to pay Southampton for his services.

Since we got him, van Dijk has more clean-sheets than any other player in the Premier League, so it’s far to say his role of transforming our backline has well and truly been fulfilled.
