Carra ranks van Dijk 3rd best CB on planet behind these two stars

Jamie Carragher thinks Virgil van Dijk can become the best centre-back in the world, but only if he starts winning silverware with Liverpool.

As a result, our former defender has named the giant Dutchman behind Real Madrid duo Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane in his overall rankings.

This term, Liverpool have conceded just three Premier League goals, and while all the backline has been incredible, van Dijk has been its leader and example to follow.

“He’s right in the top group,” Carra told Sky Sports. “Some people may put him top, I would just hang fire with that, with the fact that he hasn’t won the biggest trophies yet – I think you have to do that.

“He got to the Champions League final last season, but I think the two players at the other end of the pitch – Ramos and Varane – not so much that they’re better players than Virgil van Dijk, but they’ve won Champions Leagues, both won the World Cup, so I think when you’ve got that on the CV it’s hard to look past those two.”

We wouldn’t swap van Dijk with the Real Madrid stars, but we can accept Carra’s logic. Varane just won the World Cup and the Champions League – it doesn’t get any better than that when it comes to football!

At 27, van Dijk is about the enter the peak years of his career. We can guarantee he’ll stay with us until his early thirties at the very least – and by that time – should have some trophies for his hard work.

The Premier League would be completely incredible, but topping Pep Guardiola’s City is going to take a monumental effort.
