“Not cool”: Klopp outlines why he was extra frustrated by Lovren injury

Jurgen Klopp says he is even more irritated than normal by the injury Dejan Lovren picked up against Wolves in the FA Cup because the Croatian defender was not meant to be starting the game.

In the initial plans for the tie, Lovren was not to be involved from the start, but minor injuries to Adam Lallana and Jordan Henderson and ‘illness’ for other members of the squad meant a last-minute revamp.

Klopp told LiverpoolFC.com: “We had to make late changes. Dejan was not in the plans, he should only have been on the bench and then what happened, happened. That doesn’t help a lot and we had to change again.

“Dejan played a lot of games in the last three or four weeks, pretty much all the games, that’s why he was not involved [in the original plans]. He played today and was injured – that’s the situation; not too cool.”

The injury gave a debut to 16-year-old Ki-Jana Hoever, who became the club’s youngest player in the FA Cup, and the Dutchman did very well, but to lose another centre-back to injury is a big blow.

With Joel Matip and Joe Gomez already out, Lovren joining them is not ideal.

Fabinho will probably have to slot in alongside Virgil van Dijk in the centre of defence at Brighton on Saturday afternoon, although Gini Wijnaldum played there last season at the Amex Stadium and is another option.
