The shocking Lovren stat that shows Reds need to dip into the market

Dejan Lovren is a very good defender.

Twitter might have you believe differently most of the time, but the Croatian reached the Champions League final and the World Cup final in the space of a few months for a reason.

Nevertheless, there can be reasonable doubts about his suitability to Liverpool in the coming months and years.

He is fine as a third or fourth choice defender, but when Joe Gomez is out for a sustained period of time, Lovren simply cannot be relied upon to deputise, as the following statistic shows.

Having one player with an injury record like that is fine, but Joel Matip is similarly fragile, and Joe Gomez spent months out not that long ago and is currently sidelined having been injured at Burnley.

So big is the injury crisis, Fabinho will probably have to line up against Brighton as a centre-half, alongside Virgil van Dijk, who himself has a knock.

Lovren is fine as an option, but Jurgen Klopp would do well to find another centre-back that can be rotated in the team – a side going for the Premier League title cannot afford a crisis at the back.
