Liverpool rivalling Tottenham for superb 20-year-old midfielder – report

Liverpool have reportedly emerged as surprise competition for Tottenham in their pursuit of Declan Rice.

The West Ham midfielder continues to attract interest from the Premier League’s top clubs amid an outstanding individual 2018/2019 campaign.

Rice has cemented a starting role under Manuel Pellegrini after becoming a fan favourite and regular for the Hammers last season.

There had been fears the 20-year-old would depart in the summer as negotiations over a new contract began to stall due to a minor wage dispute with the club.

Nonetheless, a renewed effort to secure his services recently saw the Republic of Ireland international pen a five-and-a-half year deal.

Tottenham are now plotting a £35million move for Rice, with Liverpool also interested, according to the Daily Express.

The Reds were subjected to the latest insight into his talent on Monday as Rice served as a thorn in Liverpool’s attacking endeavours at the London Stadium.

Besides proving an intelligent blockade in front of his defence, he has also showcased his ability to pass between the lines as a foundation to West Ham’s counter-attacking qualities.

For Liverpool to pursue yet another deep-lying midfielder seems unlikely given the rise of Fabinho and Jurgen Klopp’s unwavering faith in skipper Jordan Henderson. That said, the club will soon have to start thinking about finding long-term replacements for the likes of James Milner and Adam Lallana.
