Agent Naby Keita alludes to role in Timo Werner transfer amid Liverpool links

Naby Keita admits he would ask Timo Werner to join him at Liverpool if his future does lie away from RB Leipzig.

The pair spent two seasons together in Germany, proving instrumental in the club’s second-placed finish in the Bundesliga in 2016/2017.

It was Keita’s influence in the team’s first campaign since gaining promotion to the top flight that attracted Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool to his services.

Two years later and his former teammate Werner is now being linked with an Anfield switch as the Reds seek to bolster their attacking ranks.

Keita told Sport Bild: “We played really well together at Leipzig, and he was one of my best mates. It’s clear: Should he move, then I ask Timo to join us here at Liverpool.”

Leipzig are reportedly open to selling Werner in the summer ahead of the expiry of his current contract in June 2020, with negotiations over a new deal continuing to stall.

Both Liverpool and Bayern Munich have been tipped as potential suitors for the 22-year-old, who has scored 56 goals in 101 games across all competitions since signing from Stuttgart in 2016.

Werner may well drop onto Klopp’s radar when he targets long-term replacements for Divock Origi and Daniel Sturridge, both of whom are expected to leave in the summer.
