Surprise contract expected after Klopp ‘blown away in training’

Here’s an interesting story that will likely divide fans at the start of the week…

According to Football Insider, Liverpool are lining up a new contract for Divock Origi and want the Belgian to stay at the club long beyond the end of this campaign.

The striker has climbed ahead of Xherdan Shaqiri and Daniel Sturridge in Jurgen Klopp’s attacking pecking order, and recently, has been very much the first-choice replacement for Mo Salah, Sadio Mane or Roberto Firmino.

In our past 12 games, Origi has featured on ten occasions – starting twice and making crucial cameos in our victories over Fulham and Spurs.

Instead of deploying him centrally, Klopp has stuck Origi on the left and allowed him to dribble, which seems to suit the 23-year-old more than a pivotal, static role up top.

Football Insider reckon Origi’s revival will see the club try and keep him long-term. The forward’s deal expires in 2020, so it was assumed we’d cash in this summer and bring in somebody else.

But with the front-three positions tied up short and long-term, it’s only really exciting subs we need – and if Origi can fulfil that role – we perhaps don’t need to spend big.

Of course, a lot depends on whether he’s happy with that position or if he wants to try his luck elsewhere.
