Nicol criticises Joe Gomez in weird transfer demand

Matthijs de Ligt would be an exciting addition, but ultimately, an unnecessary one.

James Pearce of the Echo explained how a central defender is not a priority and that the talented Dutchman won’t be arriving at Anfield this summer.

We think this is the right way to go. In Joel Matip, Dejan Lovren and Joe Gomez, we have three central defenders all perfectly capable of partnering Virgil van Dijk to a high level.

After all, we finished the Premier League campaign with the best defensive record in the country.

But Steve Nicol has oddly claimed we need to buy de Ligt as Gomez has already reached his potential and won’t get any better.

Nicol told ESPN FC: “I’ll tell you what, De Ligt and Van Dijk at any club would be arguably the best centre-back pairing in world football, no question.

“And absolutely Liverpool need to try and get somebody beside Van Dijk who is in his stratosphere.

“The thing is though, Gomez before he got injured was doing an excellent job but I’m not sure that he is going to get any better than he already is to be honest with you.

“So I think it would serve Liverpool well to go and get somebody beside Van Dijk who is tried and trusted.”

Gomez is 21-years-old and has missed a part of every season he’s played with us injured – so to suggest he’s already maximised his potential is madness.

During his stint as a centre-back alongside van Dijk at the start of the season, Gomez was performing to an incredibly high level – arguably not far off what de Ligt has offered in the Champions League.

We’re 100% happy with Gomez, Matip and Lovren competing for one position next term. We’d like the young Englishman to enjoy a good pre-season and start 2019/20 as he did this one.
