AS: Liverpool lodge bid for La Liga star to bolster defence

Spanish publication AS are reporting that Liverpool have submitted a €25million bid for Real Sociedad centre-back Diego Llorente.

The 25-year-old defender has attracted interest from West Ham, Fulham and Everton, according to Mundo Deportivo. AS state that Llorente has a €50million release clause and cite ‘reports in Engand’ as their source for the report.

The centre-back is a Spanish international – having earned his first call-up three years ago, and has made two appearances for La Furia Roja.

Llorente is renowned for his all-round game; he’s an intelligent player who is able to prevent dangerous situations from happening.

Opinion

The Spaniard would be a welcome addition to our squad, but he isn’t a player we need. If Dejan Lovren does indeed move on, as Jamie Carragher has recently suggested mightn’t be a bad thing, then there’d be a hole in the squad Llorente would be perfect to fill.

The Sociedad man isn’t dissimilar to the playing style we’ve come to expect from Joe Gomez, but there’d be question marks over the defensive hierarchy if he moves to Anfield.

“Come to Liverpool, replace Dejan, and become our fourth-choice centre-back” would be a very hard sell. If we sign a player in his prime, like Llorente, I’d expect him to slot in next to Virgil van Dijk.
