After our last match against Sunderland, I saw a few fellow kopites really excited and talking about we’ll have no problem against our Europa League rivals Benfica. But do kopites know who is Benfica?
My family is from Portugal and almost all of them are Benfica supporters so I quite know this club. Benfica is the most succesfull club in Portugal, with 31 league titles, 24 Portuguese Cups and 2 European cups. yeah they’ve been struggling in recent years with Porto but this year the have a great team, full of talent and youth along side with some experimented men.
The won the League Cup already, they’re in the final of another domestic cup (sorry for dont know which one), and they’re leading the league comfortably with Porto 11 point behind in third place.
Players to be aware of:
Both brazilian center-backs, David Luiz and Luisao. The first one is really young but Real Madrid almost sign him this winter as the new Pepe so the kid must have something. Luisao is their captain, he’s solid rock and has a place in Brazil’s starting 11 for the world cup. Both of them can score goals, remenber our last clash against them at Estadio Da Luz, was Luisao who scored the winner for them.
Yes, they dont have Simao anymore but they have brought southamerican power!
First Pablo “el payasito” (the little clown) Aimar. Rafa really knows this player, he was he’s key player when he was at Valencia and won La Liga and UEFA Cup, he even score a beautiful goal against Liverpool (Antoine posted the video a few weeks ago). He’s a really clever player, really dangerous! He was at top when he was at Valencia, then he went to Real Zaragoza and his carrer seemed to be over but Benfica signed him and he has come back to life in a outstanding form. He recently got calls for Argentina national squad.
Maxi Pereira, this right back from Uruguay is very talented, he goes to attack really well and has powerfull shot! I hope whoever is gonna play in our left wing takes adavantage of his attacking displays.
Ramirez, this brazilian defensive midfielder has done great for Benfica this season, a few clubs are targeting him for the next season. He was in the starting 11 of Brazil in the Confederations Cup and he has prove that he can score goals.
Javier “el conejito” (the little bunny) Saviola, former Barcelona and Real Madrid striker, he started slow at Portugal but know he’s been on fire! Fans love him and he loves the club, as Aimar he’s been on the eye for Maradona but it seems hard to get a call with the competition of Tevez, Messi, Higuain,Aguero and Milito. Anyway the lad is really fast and dangerous, it’ll be hard for Carra to keep an eye on him. He has scored 11 goals so far
Cardozo, this striker from Paraguay is a beast! He has a cannon on his left goot, he’s Benfica’s top scorer this season, a very complete player, really tall but he knows how to move between lines. He has scored 19 goals so far
Angel Di Maria, probably their best player, this wonder winger wizard is the target of a lot of european clubs, as Real Madrid, Barcelona, the scum, us (but sadly we cant compete with those clubs). The guy is simply incredible! He has earned a place in Argentina’s starting 11 for thw world cup. He won a U21 world cup along side with Messi and Agüero. He’ll be a nightmare for Insua or Johnson, we cant leave any space or we’re done he’s driblin and power shots are just incredible.
Javi Garcia, this spanish midfielder was left out for Real Madrid and Benfica saw a gem! He’s been catalogued as the best signing of the season in Portuguese League, he makes the transition from defense to attack but he has scored a few goals this season (he’s like their Xabi).
So I think Liverpool we’ll go through but it’ll be a really hard match, both away and home.
Dont kill me for saying this but I think Rafa will start with Lucas tomorrow and I dont blame him, they’re fast, the style is similar as Barcelona so we have to destroy their game, and after all Lucas has done great games this season, like United at home, or at Villa Park or recently against Lille so trusth the lad please! He has improved a lot since last season
Well as I said, we’ll go through but it wont be easy at all.

On Thursday we take a trip to Lisbon to face Benfica in the Europa League Quarter-Final, this will be our 100th game in the competition.
We have not had much luck against Portugese teams in the past and it was Benfica who eliminated us from the Champions League back in 2006 with a double win (1-0 in Portugal & 2-0 at Anfield).
I believe that Rafa will go with an attacking formation to try to snatch that precious away goal.
On the Liverpool injury list we have Alberto Aquilani, Fabio Aurelio, Martin Kelly & Martin Skrtel.
Kick off is at 8:05PM UK Time
Carra wants to finish his career at Liverpool more…
(I still dream of a team of Carraghers)
Kuyt tells team mates “Let us not do an Everton against Benfica” more…
Steve Bruce is still drooling over Torres more…
(Keep drooling Brucie, he is our No 9)
Rafa wants to keep Torres happy more…
(And so do we)
And the Gaffer is happy with the attacking options more…
(Let us unleash them against Benfica)
And he also hails Daniel Agger more…
(Agger was awesome against Sunderland, showing lots of swagger there and yes ladies is looks better than Mick Jagger)
Aquilani is having a hard time learning English more…
(All you need to know are 3 words, 1. Pass 2. Shoot 3. Goal)
The Daily Fail calls Aquilani a flop? more…
(The editor of the paper is a flop)
The same rag claims that Riera’s transfer has stalled more…
(Well this is what I am afraid of that this would turn out into another Dossena. We do not need players who do not want to be at the club hanging around they are not good for morale)
Martin Kelly is out for the rest of the season more…
And Lee Chung-yong’s agent dismisses the Liverpool link more…
(Let the ridiculous season start)
And Raul is linked with Liverpool now more…
(Great player but he has passed his prime)
Jose Mourinho is tired of the Italian game more…
(Try France or La Liga)
And finally Premier League clubs (including LFC of course) will receive an extra 7.5 million from International TV rights more…
(I doubt Rafa will see any of the money for transfers however, it is these kind of deals that keeps H&G holding on to the club. They know that the club will see more revenue coming in as the Premier League gets more coverage in Asia and the club’s valuation will rise.)

As Rooney limped off I yelled “no world cup for you” I did get a few cheers from some Scots :-)
