LFC Transfer Speculation: http://twitter.com/LFCTransferSpec
This morning I woke up to read an article on LFC.TV taking a shot at the fact that the various journalists, ‘in-the-knows’, fans and twitterati in general have linked LFC to 66 different players in the last one month.
Being a sucker for gossip and twitter, I would have to admit that I’ve read most of the links and have been excited by most. I have also been disappointed when links like Young, Jones and Wickham didn’t come to fruition.
What the Wickham story and the aforesaid article made me realize was how we fans have this insatiable desire for information and how most of the papers/journalists (specially) tend to take that for granted; rather abuse it. Tweet something about a Liverpool link and see your follower count go up by thousands. Or, post that as a news piece on your paper/ website and bask in the glory of web-clicks and impressions. Fans invest thousands of minutes going thru these ‘stories’ and feel humiliated in the end.
That we, as fans (most of us), have fallen for these underlines the role that the club has to play in times like these. It was good on John Henry’s part that he took the time out to explain the transfer policy, to indicate that some links really don’t make sense, and to reassure us. It is all well and good that the Liverpool way is to do business behind closed doors but what we would appreciate is for us fans to be kept informed to a certain extent (note: a very very minor extent would be enough).
I find the ’66 links’ report slightly offensive. It is basically that the club is telling us: “Look guys, we would keep mum and see how the journos and the ITKs fooled y’all? Wayne Bridge??” The club should understand that we are the most important players in their system and if there are external sources taking us for a ride, the club should step in and help us avoid some of the delirium.
YNWA!
