So we are now three and a half weeks until the reds begin their new premier league campaign, with the team starting to shape up for the forthcoming season. The argument continues as to whether the reds are a stronger force this year without their star man in Luis Suarez. One thing that Brendan Rodgers does have at his disposal is options. Building a bigger squad to compete and challenge in all four competitions has clearly been the target this year. When you look back to the squad that was picked for the first game of the season against Stoke City last year, the substitute’s bench consisted of Brad Jones, Andre Wisdom, Luis Alberto, Joe Allen, Raheem Sterling, Jordan Ibe and Fabio Borini (all of which were one year younger with a year’s less experience), with Iago Aspas leading the line in the stating eleven. Fast forward a year and there will be plenty of options for Rogers if he wants to make a substitution that can have a big impact on the game. With the signings of Emre Can, Adam Lallana, Lazar Markovic, Ricky Lambert and 3 or 4 other imminent arrivals. How do you fit them into the game on the 17th August 2014 versus Southampton at Anfield?  This does create a problem, but a problem Brendan Rogers will enjoy having with more quality and options in his squad this year.

On top of all of this many of the signings and current squad can all play numerous amounts of positions. Therefore should Rodgers want to start the game with a 4-3-3 formation, then change to a 4-4-2 diamond shape, this would be possible without having to necessarily make a substitution.

As a reds fan I’m sure you will all agree that we are all excited and counting down the kick off of our new campaign. Whichever players are on the field come kick off against Southampton we will be confident they can get the three points and start the season with a bang. In Brendan we trust.
