Eight Liverpool players who need to improve after a difficult start to the season…

Liverpool have endured a difficult start to the season, with some mixed results and some poor performances from key players, including several of their summer signings who have failed to settle at Anfield.

If Brendan Rodgers’ side are to match their exceptional exploits of last season, it is vital the following selection of fringe players and struggling first-team stars find their form and begin to perform.

8) Dejan Lovren

A £20m summer signing from Southampton, Croatian defender Dejan Lovren has not yet rediscovered last season’s form, but is surely worth sticking with for the time being.

7) Glen Johnson

A player that has struggled to maintain his previously high standards in recent months, he may be decent going forward but simply doesn’t offer enough defensively to be a regular in this team at the moment.

6) Jose Enrique

A backup player who is still working his way back to full-fitness after a long term injury, the Spanish left-back needs to show he has something to offer

5) Kolo Toure

A player that is unfortunately past his peak, he was a gamble signing last summer and one that has seemingly served its purpose for Brendan Rodgers, who is now far from willing to make use of him.

4) Simon Mignolet

Mignolet has not yet managed to replicate his best form from his days at Sunderland since joining Liverpool last summer, and despite some good moments is yet to convince.

3) Rickie Lambert

Several good seasons at Southampton persuaded Liverpool to sign Rickie Lambert on the cheap, but he has offered little thus far, even as a backup player at Anfield, and looks short on confidence.

2) Fabio Borini

Loaned out to Sunderland last season, Borini just isn’t quite cut out for this level and is one that Brendan Rodgers will surely try to sell again in January, after attempting to ditch him in the summer.

1) Mario Balotelli

A highly disappointing signing this summer, £16m man Mario Balotelli is yet to score in the Premier League for Liverpool and is a long way off replacing Luis Suarez on current form.
