Jamie Carragher mocks Manchester United – who were beaten 1-0 by Manchester City…

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has taken a not-so-subtle shot at Manchester United, following their 1-0 defeat against local rivals Manchester City.

Carragher claimed referee Michael Oliver had forgotten Sir Alex Ferguson was no longer United manager, after denying City three penalties over the course of the afternoon.

Sergio Aguero’s scored the game’s only goal, after Chris Smalling was dismissed in the first half, but the win could have been more comfortable had any of their three appeals been rewarded.

Former manager Sir Alex Ferguson was a huge figure in British football and opposition fans would often joke about his influence over officials, which Carragher was referencing in his tweet.

Sergio Aguero was brought down by Marouane Fellaini in the first half, with the big Belgian clumsily bundling the Argentine striker to the ground, only to abuse the forward for taking a tumble.

Yaya Toure raced onto a ball over the top and was recklessly brought to the ground by Marco Rojo, but when Oliver blew his whistle it was to signal half-time, not to award a spot-kick. The third appeal was the softest, but still could have been given, when Aguero was brought down in the second half after a short run.

Following the defeat, United remain in ninth place in the Premier League table, with just 13 points from their ten matches so far. They have won just three matches in all competitions, but are still just a point behind Liverpool.
