Brendan Rodgers on Chelsea: ‘we deserved at least a point from the game’…

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has bemoaned his team’s lack of luck, as the Reds missed out on what he believed to be a clear penalty during the 2-1 defeat against Chelsea.

As the Daily Mail reports, Gary Cahill appeared to use his arm to block Steven Gerrard effort, while a downcast Rodgers claimed that Liverpool ‘deserved at least a point from the game’.

Defeat leaves Liverpool 15 points behind the Premier League leaders, who scored through Gary Cahill and Diego Costa, after Emre Can had given the home side the lead.

With two minutes of normal time left, Liverpool were searching for an equaliser when Gary Cahill appeared to block Steven Gerrard’s effort from outside the box with his arm.

Liverpool’s players immediately appealed for a penalty but Anthony Taylor waved them away – and Gerrard was still remonstrating with the officials at full time.

‘I thought it was a clear penalty. We’ve worked so hard in the game and ended up falling behind, but you need those decisions, the player leans into the ball and it was a clear and obvious penalty. We deserved at least a point from the game,’ Rodgers told BT Sport.

One positive for Liverpool is that striker Daniel Sturridge is on course to be return to first-team action after the international break, having not played since September after picking up a calf injury.
