Kolo Toure impressed Liverpool fans with his performance against Real Madrid…

Liverpool legend John Aldridge has bemoaned the exclusion of centre back Kolo Toure from last weekend’s defeat at home to Chelsea, admitting he was surprised the Ivorian was dropped in favour of the struggling Dejan Lovren.

Toure played in the 1-0 defeat to Real Madrid in the Bernabeu the Tuesday before their clash with the Premier League leaders, and despite the defeat he was praised for his performance at the back alongside Martin Skrtel.

However, the former Arsenal and Manchester City defender was relegated back to the bench for the Reds 2-1 defeat at Anfield on Saturday, in favour of the £20m summer signing.

In his Liverpool Echo column, Aldridge said: “[Against Chelsea] There was a spell just before half-time when I don’t think I’ve seen us as nervous at the back.

“I have to say I was surprised that Kolo Toure was left out following his performance in Spain. He was by far our best player in the Bernabeu and had a great game.

“He is playing with confidence and I would have asked him to continue on Saturday. If he is playing with confidence, that will spread to his defensive partners and the goalkeeper – and suddenly the defensive unit immediately starts to look more secure.”
