Glen Johnson to Roma: Liverpool defender set for Anfield exit…

Roma are reportedly confident of sealing a deal for Liverpool and England defender Glen Johnson, and are ready to step up their bid to land the full-back after Christmas.

According to the Daily Mail, Roma are keen on bringing in Johnson under Bosman ruling, with the 30-year-old out of contract at Anfield at the end of the season.

Johnson is no closer to agreeing a new deal, and his departure looks an inevitability. Roma have not been overly impressed with Ashley Cole since his arrival from Chelsea but believe Johnson has more to offer.

Liverpool have been reluctant to improve Johnson’s contract as he is already on around £120,000 a week, and has been criticised for a number of his performances so far this year.

The Mail states that Roma are happy to pay the wages on Bosman transfers, and like the idea of Johnson because he has proved able to play in both full-back positions and on the right of midfield.

Roma will be free to talk to Johnson in January, and could arrange a deal on a pre-contractual basis. Johnson joined Liverpool from Portsmouth in 2009, and is approaching 150 league games for the club.
