Mark Lawrenson promises Liverpool defence will improve

Ex-star thinks the Reds can turn it around…

Former Liverpool star Mark Lawrenson reckons that the well publicised problems with our defence are exaggerated, and that the current batch have the talent to improve.

The Reds have conceded 15 Premier League goals so far this term in just 11 matches, and although our attack has been fairly stale, the defence has, at times – been nothing short of criminal.

The Irishman reckons though that the influx of new players has been partly to blame, and that scoring goals ourselves will silence the doubters.

“It’s not a lack of ability and it’s not a lack of working on the problems on the training ground and trying to iron them out – that will happen, you know that will happen,” Lawrenson told Liverpoolfc.com.

“As much as anything, it’s communication. We have got Manquillo, Moreno and Lovren as new players; they will all be in the position that we have all been in before of trying to justify your ability.

“When the team is not playing well, everything is exaggerated. Start scoring a few goals, start winning games and I do think the rest will come.”

Lawrenson made 356 appearances for Liverpool in total, notching 18 goals – and winning five First Division titles and one European Cup.

He was never a star of our title winning sides, but provided a consistent and versatile option between 1981 and 1988, and has the medals to prove it.

We hope he’s right, and that the likes of Martin Skrtel, Dejan Lovren and Glen Johnson up their defensive level in coming weeks.
