Phil Neville claims Liverpool set unrealistic targets at the start of the season…

Phil Neville is not going to be a popular man with anyone associated with Liverpool football club. Even those capable of overlooking his connections with Manchester United and Everton will struggle to appreciate his input on our recent struggles.

Speaking on Match of the Day, he said: “There were unrealistic targets set for Liverpool this season, especially with Luis Suarez leaving the club. Without him (Suarez) last season they would have finished seventh at the end of the day.

“And now without him they are around about where they have been for the four seasons prior to last when they were second. Liverpool have consistently finished in the Europa League positions and when I look at their squad now that’s where I think they’ll finish.

“I still think he (Rodgers) is the right man for the job though and should be given more time, but understandably at the moment he is under pressure.”

Liverpool have certainly struggled without last season’s top scorer, who left for Barcelona in a £75m move during the summer transfer window. But it seems clear to most people that watch the Reds on a regular basis, that our problems run deeper that the loss of the talismanic Uruguayan.

It’s important to remember that Liverpool dealt well without Suarez at the start of last season. While he was suspended, it was Daniel Sturridge who led the line, and he too has been a huge loss through injury this term.

We have also failed to squash our issues in defence, which ultimately cost us the title last season. Only by having a reliable and assured back four and goalkeeper can we breath new found confidence into the rest of the team.
