Brendan Rodgers: ‘Blame everyone for Champions League failure’

‘Just not good enough,’ claims boss…

Boss Brendan Rodgers reckons everyone at the club, including himself, the players and the staff are to blame for the miserable Champions League showing, reports the Times.

We finished the group stages on four points, managing the sole victory when we scraped to the three points against minnows Ludogorets at Anfield.

“We are obviously disappointed,” Rodgers began.

“We can’t have any excuses about not qualifying. We had enough games. If you deserve to go through, you get the points and you go through. For us it is simple; we haven’t been good enough over the course of the competition to go through.

“When you don’t qualify, everyone gets looked on. Across the board we have been looked at and analysed. For us, the solution is simple, we have to be better in our performance level. That is everyone. That is the manager and the players.

“But we also have to realise where we have come from,” the manager added.

“The expectation coming into the season was high, but it is a different squad and a different group of players. There is disappointment, but now we have to fight for the rest of the season and make it a success.”

It’s not worth us dragging up the multiple reasons for our European failure as they are tenfold and debatable.

We have now entered the Europa League, and while this competition is viewed on as a curse by many, it does offer us the chance of Champions League qualification if we win it.

This will be no mean feat with the likes of AS Roma, Inter Milan, Sporting Lisbon, Napoli and Spurs all competing for the trophy; but if we rediscover some of last season’s potency it’s by no means out of the question.
