Glen Johnson has been ruled out of Liverpool’s Christmas schedule with a groin injury…

Liverpool will be without full-back Glen Johnson for the entirety of their festive fixture list, after the England international limped out of Sunday’s defeat at Manchester United with a groin injury.

Reports in the Liverpool Echo confirm that the experienced right-back  tore his groin midway through the first half at Old Trafford and is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines – expected to be at least a month.

The 30-year-old, who is out of contract at the end of the season and is yet to be offered a new deal, will have a scan to confirm the full extent of the damage.

Johnson, who has endured his fair share of criticism from Liverpool supporters in recent times, and has been linked with a move away from the club, has made 15 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring once.

His absence could mean an extended run in the team for young Spaniard Javier Manquillo, who didn’t even make the bench last weekend, and fellow youngster Jon Flanagan, who is belatedly nearing full-fitness after struggling to overcome a knee injury.

The former is likely to start Wednesday’s Capital One Cup tie against Bournemouth, while Flanagan is expected to be back in first-team contention by the middle of next month.
