Rafa Benitez is inches away from Napoli sack

Former Reds boss set to be axed by Serie A giants…

Italian paper Gazzetta dello Sport has today claimed that “the probabilities that Benitez will stay [at Napoli] are close to zero”. (Reported here in the Mirror.)

The Spanish boss has been in charge since the start of 2013/14, and he led Napoli to Coppa Italia glory and a top four finish during his debut campaign, which was seen as an achievement having sold Edinson Cavani in the summer.

Napoli fans were hoping this would be a springboard to further success, but their side failed to reach the Group Stages of the Champions League after surprisingly losing a Play-Off, and are currently seventh in Serie A.

They’re actually only two points behind 3rd placed Roma, but this is enough for owner Aurelio De Laurentis to consider a change following their 2-0 defeat to AC Milan in Sunday.

Benitez had been linked with a possible return to Liverpool, but Times journalist Tony Evans reckons this is virtually impossible because FSG have a low opinion of him.

Benitez famously led us to Champions League glory in 2005, FA Cup glory in 2006 and within inches of the title in 2008/09…
