Reports claim Liverpool ‘head the race’ for Fabian Delph, out of contract in 2015

Would the 25-year-old boost our midfield?

England international Fabian Delph has emerged as a key Liverpool target due to the fact his contract expires in six months’ time, reports the Mirror.

The 25-year-old currently plies his trade for Aston Villa, and his early season form earned him a call-up to Roy Hodgson’s national side.

Despite Villa’s attempts to secure his future, Delph, along with teammate Ron Vlaar, have not signed extensions. This means clubs will be able to freely approach the pair from January 1st with a view to signing them on Bosman free transfers in the summer.

As a result, Liverpool (and any other club) could approach Villa to sign Delph for a reduced fee when the transfer window opens, or offer him a contract directly – aware that he won’t arrive until the start of the 2015/16 season.

Delph has a strong engine, and works tirelessly in the centre. At his best, he combines this with thrust and drive through the middle, although fans see this too rarely.

It’s unlikely his arrival, even for a bargain fee, would be met with enormous excitement upon Merseyside.

It’s questionable whether Delph would be an improvement on Henderson, Lucas, Can and Allen or Gerrard – all of whom are already competing for places in the centre.
