Brendan Rodgers makes bizarre claim following Arsenal draw

Salvaged draw better than our best performance of 2013/14…?

Manager Brendan Rodgers has strangely claimed that Liverpool’s performance against Arsenal on Sunday was actually better than the 5-1 demolition last season, reports the Daily Mail.

We dominated possession against the Gunners, but ended up falling 2-1 behind late on, going down to ten men, and only salvaging a draw with a last minute Martin Skrtel header.

Rodgers took delight at the team’s showing though, and lavished them with praise after the game.

“Our performance was outstanding, the passing, intensity and the pressing.
So we are disappointed with the goals we conceded but our character was very good. We have played better and dominated more than we did last year when we won 5-1,” he claimed.

In the first half especially, we did play pretty well – but ultimately failed to turn consistent possession into genuine chances.

In the same fixture last year however, we were jaw-droppingly good. The team was 4-0 up after 20 minutes, and it could have been seven. The brand of football was so scintillating, Arsenal had to revert to an ultra defensive style just to avoid an even bigger humiliation.

On that day at Anfield, we could have feasibly beaten any side in the world…

Rodgers thinks yesterday’s performance though proves that we can finish in the top four this season.

“Absolutely. It is always going to be a big challenge. Of course, we have to make up points but we have shown this is a club that can go on a run and win games,” he said.

“In the second half of last season, we went on a run of 11 wins. The most important thing is the confidence. When we bring Daniel Sturridge back in January, we can get back to being that team.

We next face Burnley on Boxing Day, hoping to pick up the win needed to fire us into the top half of the table.
