Telegraph outrageously thinks Liverpool could get rid of 12 defensive players next summer

Surely Reds will keep at least a few of these players…?

Chris Bascombe in the Telegraph has outlined 12 defensive players who could all feasibly leave Liverpool this summer, for various reasons…

Here’s the stars he’s included in his list:

Liverpool defenders/keepers with uncertain future:
Out of contract, summer 2015: Kolo Touré, Glen Johnson, Jon Flanagan, Brad Jones (g)
Out of contract, summer 2016: Martin Skrtel
Failing to impress: Simon Mignolet (g), Mamadou Sakho, Jose Enrique
Out on loan: Sebastian Coates (Sunderland), Andre Wisdom (West Brom), Tiago Ilori (Bordeaux)
On loan at Anfield: Javier Manquillo

What’s more, Bascombe doesn’t even include Dejan Lovren or Alberto Moreno in his story – both summer signings who could quite easily have been included in the Failing to impress category…

So which of these stars are really likely to leave? Let’s take a look…

If Kolo Toure continues playing the way he is at the moment, he could earn a one-year contract extension. Glen Johnson is almost certain to leave because of his wages, but providing Jon Flanagan’s injury problems aren’t career threatening, he’ll surely get an extension, too. Brad Jones will surely be allowed to leave on a free though, because he’s simply not good enough.

Martin Skrtel is one of the first names on Brendan Rodgers’ team-sheet, and regardless of our thoughts on the Slovakian, he’s unlikely to leave if Rodgers is in charge.

Simon Mignolet could possibly move on if we sign a new no.1, while Jose Enrique is probably not up to scratch either. Having signed for £18m in the summer of 2013, Mamadou Sakho will surely stay – as he’s never had a chance to properly prove himself due to injuries.

The players currently out on loan possibly have Liverpool futures. Andre Wisdom has done well enough with the Baggies this term, while Ilori cost £7m in 2013, and will surely get a chance at some point having yet to make a first-team appearance.

Coates is likely to leave, however.

Javier Manquillo’s loan deal expires in 2016, meaning barring anything unusual, he’ll be with us beyond next summer, too.

So of the 12 players, only five will realistically leave in the summer: Johnson, Jones, Mignolet, Enrique and Coates.
