Liverpool are getting new pitch because current one is ‘difficult to play one-touch football on’

Brendan Rodgers has ordered the pitch to be dug up at Anfield…

Manager Brendan Rodgers has explained the reason why Liverpool are digging up the Anfield playing surface at the end of the season and getting a new one, reports the Telegraph.

The Reds have struggled to break teams down at Anfield this term, and we’ve only managed nine goals at home in the Premier League so far.

“We will be getting a new pitch next summer to help the speed of our game,” explained the new boss.

“It is an old pitch that has not been upgraded for some years and it can be a disadvantage for us. It is difficult to play one-touch football on it.

“It is nothing to do with the ground staff at the club or at Melwood, who are outstanding, it is just because the pitch is old. We will do the best on it until the end of the season.”

From an outsider looking in, the Anfield playing surface always looks immaculate, and it almost seems that Rodgers is almost using it as an excuse for the team’s failure to play the football we did during the 2013/14 season…

“We will do our best until the end of the season,” seems like a fairly pessimistic statement, but if the pitch truly is affecting our ability to move the ball quickly, then it’s good news that something’s being done about it.

Looking at the comments from a more positive angle, they show that the owners are committed to the long-term aim of playing winning, attractive football at Anfield – possibly – with Rodgers at the helm…
