Liverpool want to trump Arsenal for James Milner, out of contract in 2015

The Englishman has yet to agree a contract extension with the Premier League champions…

Providing he doesn’t agree a contract extension with Manchester City (which he could well do), Arsenal and Liverpool could battle it out for James Milner’s signature, reports the Metro.

The 28-year-old has been one of City’s better performers this season, but he’s yet to pen a new deal amid concerns that he’ll be back on the bench when Manuel Pellegrini has a full roster to choose from.

Milner’s deal expires in the summer, meaning any club will be able to freely approach him come 2015. If he agrees a deal with either Liverpool or Arsenal, he’ll arrive at the end of the season on a Bosman free transfer.

Milner’s versatility has often been his downfall, and he’s easy to forget that prior to his Etihad move he displayed creative and technical attributes at Aston Villa.

Due to the job he’s asked to do at City though, he’s been labelled a workhorse, and this does him a serious disservice.

If we could sign Milner on a free, it would be a complete no-brainer. The midfielder has always stated a preference to stay with City, providing he’s given the requisite game-time, however.
