Rodgers says Gerrard will make a great coach

The manager is confident of his captain’s abilities.

Brendan Rodgers says Steven Gerrard will make a great coach one day as the midfielder’s 17 year career at Liverpool draws to a close.

Gerrard will leave Anfield at the end of the season and probably go and play in MLS, but with the captain turning 35 next May there is every likeliness he too is looking towards coaching.

Rodgers has confidence that the midfielder will have plenty to share and it would be the natural progression for the club legend.

“I do genuinely believe that he is that type, he can offer great advice,” said the boss, who has worked closely with Gerrard for two-and-a-half years.

“It’s whether it’s something that he wants to do.

“From my perspective here, the experience that he has of Liverpool as a club and those little bits of gold dust that he can give players would be invaluable to young players.

“But moving into coaching and management is not something you just click your fingers and move into. There’s a lot of work, lot of hours, lot of time and a lot of commitment that has to go into that.

“You see coaches coming in on the back of managers, learning the ropes and then maybe one day moving on in that field.

“For Steven, that would be a great opportunity for him to do that, but time will tell if that’s something that he’s really interested in.”

There is no doubting that Gerrard would be welcomed back to the club with open arms at any point in the future and many of us would probably love to see him in the dugout.

Only time will tell whether that happens or not.
