This team has plenty of potential, if only they’d all been able to play together…

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard might be on his way to LA Galaxy in the summer, but he recently named his greatest XI, featuring players that he’s starred alongside during his time at Anfield.

Jamie Carragher names his all-time Liverpool XI – featuring jaw-dropping front three

Despite leaving out a host of players who he won the Champions League with in 2005, it’s hard to argue with his choices. What do you make of his selections…?

GK) Pepe Reina

How Liverpool must wish they could have the Spaniard back! He won the FA Cup in 2006 and the League Cup in 2012, before leaving for Bayern Munich in the summer. He had his moments, but certainly had a lot more consistency that Brendan Rodgers’ current crop.

DR) Glen Johnson

Was always likely to be a toss up between the England international and Steve Finnan. Johnson’s selection might surprise a few, as he’s come in for plenty of criticism over the years. But he’s been a good servant at Anfield, and has impressed in the past.

DC) Sami Hyypia

A legendary figure at Liverpool. The Finnish star played a huge role in our 2005 Champions League triumph, and we’re probably still waiting for another centre back of his quality.

DC) Jamie Carragher

From one icon to another, Carragher’s retirement in 2013 came as a huge blow to Liverpool, and who knows whether his presence could have taken our title bid over the line during the previous campaign. Another player the Reds are yet to replace.

DL) John-Arne Riise

The goal-scoring full-back will always be remembered at Anfield. His ferocious striking of the football is still talked about, and not until Alberto Moreno have we had another left-sided defender capable of bombing down the flank and creating chances.

MC) Javier Mascherano

The Argentine’s reputation has only continued to grow since leaving Liverpool for Barcelona, where he is now regarded as one of the very best holding midfielders in world football. Played a big role in helping the Reds reach the Champions League final in 2007.

MC) Steven Gerrard

He could hardly exclude himself could he? The midfield maestro almost single-handedly dragged the Reds to their Champions League and FA Cup triumphs in the mid-2000’s. It’s such a shame that the skipper was never able to add the Premier League title to his collection.

MC) Xabi Alonso

Another player Liverpool have missed ever since his departure for Real Madrid. Now at Bayern Munich, the Spanish midfield star was another member of the 2005 Champions League winning side, scoring the third goal in the comeback against AC Milan. What a player he was.

FC) Luis Suarez

One of the best players to grace a Liverpool shirt in the 21st century. The Uruguayan slammed in 31 goals last season to take us within touching distance of the Premier League title, before departing in a £75m deal to Barcelona in the summer.

FC) Fernando Torres

The predecessor to Suarez at Anfield, the Spaniard was brilliant at time during his Liverpool career, although he will be best remembered for the decline that followed his exit from the club. He cost Chelsea £50m in 2011, a deal which never did pay off.

FC) Robbie Fowler

Arguably the last great striker at Liverpool – prior to Torres and Suarez. Fowler scored 128 league goals for the Reds, while his career also included spells with the likes of Leeds United and Manchester City. But he will be best remembered as an Anfield legend.
