The 20-year-old England international forward turned down our second contract offer earlier this week, with talks over a new deal continuing to make little or no progress.

Reports in the Daily Mirror confirm that Sterling turned down a ‘double your money offer’ last month, when the Reds offered him £70,000-per-week, double his current wage packet.

The second offer was thought to be close to the six figure mark, but it now seems as if we will need to surpass that to convince him to stay.

Sterling, who has become a key player for both club and country over the last 18 months, has already played more minutes for Liverpool this season than he did last season and feels that should be recognised.

He has even attracted interest from the likes of European champions Real Madrid, who are ready to pounce should Liverpool and Sterling fail to come to an agreement.

It’s a difficult situation for Liverpool, who don’t want to overpay the young attacker, but are more desperate not to lose him. Over £100k-per-week for a man just turned 20 seems barbaric, but his ability arguably warrants it.
