Argentine striker: ‘I’d be honoured if Liverpool rumours are real’

Would you take him at Anfield, Reds…?

Inter Milan’s talented young Argentine striker Mauro Icardi has fuelled speculation that he could join us in the summer, reports the Echo.

However, he does admit that while he’s flattered by Liverpool’s interest, he is happy at his current club.

“If the rumours about Liverpool are real, I would be honoured, because they are a big club, but I’m already in a great team where I can win something important,” Icardi said.

The 21-year-old enjoyed a breakthrough campaign in 2013/14, and has continued his good form for the Italian giants this campaign – scoring 13 Serie A goals in 19 starts – meaning only Juventus’s world-class striker Carlos Tevez has so far notched more.

As a result of his good form, and our well-publicised striker problems this campaign, rumours are rife that he’ll be of the players we target come summer 2015.

Icardi is an excellent finisher, but like Mario Balotelli perhaps, pressing and defensive contribution doesn’t come naturally to him – and he prefers to stick central rather than work the channels.

This makes us question whether our interest in him is just speculation, but his talent in front of goal is unquestioned, and his age makes him fit FSG’s transfer policy.
