Despite almost leading the Reds to a first top flight title in 25 years last year, Rodgers believes that securing a second successive season of Champions League football would eclipse anything he’s done during his Anfield career.

Liverpool host Manchester City later today, looking to further close the gap on the top four places and extend an incredible run of domestic form that stretches back to mid-December.

Explaining his comments, Rodgers told the Daily Mirror: “If we arrive in the top four this year, with everything we have been through, it will be a greater achievement than last year.

“If you look at where we were last season, having just one game a week and going so close, it was indeed an incredible achievement.

“But making the top four this year would certainly be better. I say that because a lot of new players have arrived at the club.

“It wasn’t a group that stayed together and we just added a couple of players, like Chelsea [have done]. For us, it was near enough a new team again, and those new players have needed time to settle into the club.

“I think we are over that period now. We are full of confidence and hoping to finish the season strongly. But some big clubs are going to miss out on the top four.

“And I would say there is more pressure on Man United and Arsenal after where they have been for the last 15 to 20 years, than there is on us.”
