Ian Ayre hints at Liverpool youth investment after financial results

We might have to sacrifice big-name players for the sake of financial security

Ian Ayre has perhaps hinted that Liverpool could invest in youth players over big money signings to improve their finances following the publishing of the club’s accounts.

The release of the club’s results yesterday showed encouraging improvements with Liverpool making a profit, £0.9 million, for the first time in seven years and the first time under FSG.

However, this was mainly thanks to the new Premier League TV deals which saw revenue at the club boosted by 19% to £255m.

The club spent £117m in the summer and whilst most of this was offset from the sale of Luis Suarez it still represents a significant outlay.

And chief-exec has possibly hinted that this spending could be curtailed as the club look to improve their financial standing in the Premier League and see us sign more youngsters as a result.

“When we talk about a financial prudency and managing the football club in the best way we can with what we have got, then that does mean investing in younger players some of the time that will cost less money to buy but give us better long-term value,” he said, reports Liverpool Echo.

“We can’t compete with some people who seem to have deeper pockets. But if you go about it the right way – and get the right result – then we can still be successful.

“What is important to say is that when we get that additional revenue, be it from Champions League, Europa League or from finishing in different positions, the one thing about this ownership group is that they have never taken a single penny out of the football club.

“So it all goes back into the team or the club. We have been very fortunate to enjoy those additional revenue streams this year – but it goes straight back into the pot. It is all going in the same place. Brendan, myself, the owners – everyone wants to achieve as much as they can achieve and it will be reinvested.”

Given the success of a very young team against Manchester City at the weekend, and the future this hints of, you’d think this revelation may not even matter.

Our squad against Manuel Pellegrini’s side had seven players below 24-years-old and whose average age was 23 and we still won 2-1 against the hardened Premier League champions.

And with the success Rodgers has had with youth, and maybe you’d suggest the lack of success he’s had with his major, established signing, maybe this forced cap would be beneficial.
