After leading the Reds to three consecutive Premier League victories – which included superb individual goals against both Burnley and Manchester City – Henderson is the toast of Merseyside.

However, he still has plenty to live up to. In the list below, we’ve ranked every Premier League captain of the Premier League era. Where will Henderson rank in the future? That remains to be seen…

8) Mark Wright (1991-1993)

Liverpool made a slow start to life in the Premier League under the leadership of their veteran defender, who retired from club football in 1998. He did however inspire an FA Cup victory in 2002.

7) Jamie Redknapp (1999-2002)

The skilful midfielder led the Reds into the 21st century, although he didn’t feature in any of the five cup finals we played in during 2001. He was an unused substitute for the Charity Shield and Super Cup victories.
