According to the Liverpool Echo, the 43-year-old, who was taking questions during a fundraiser in Ireland, was being quizzed about world class midfielders, when Gerrard’s name came up.

Asked if United should sign a player of a similar ilk to Gerrard, Keane responded: “No, we want to try win something,” before instead recommending Paul Pogba.

Gerrard is yet to win the Premier League during his outstanding career, he has won every other major honour – including the Champions League in 2005.

In contrast, while Keane was successful in domestic football, he was suspended for United’s single European triumph during his time at the club, and would do well to hold his tongue.

Tom Finney, Bobby Moore, Jimmy Greaves, Gordon Banks, Paul Gascoigne, and Nat Lofthouse also didn’t win the English top flight, and the Sir Alex Ferguson reject really should remember that!
