However, former Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini, who introduced the 24-year-old to English football when he signed him for the Premier League champions in 2010, believes that he has the quality to turn it around.

Mancini, who was quoted by the Daily Mirror, said: “I think that it’s important that Mario starts – or restarts – to think only about football. Not the other things that are around him.”

For Balotelli, the latest in a long-line of misdemeanours off the field came earlier this week, when he posted a video of himself to social media website Instagram, in which he slammed his ‘haters’.

Asked whether the Italian would improve, Mancini added: “It depends on Mario. If Mario wants to do it, he can do it. I gave him the chance to play in the first team when he was really young, and for this reason I know him very well.

“Mario has the same age as my boy [Filippo, who was on Inter’s books as a youth player]. For this reason, I love him.”
