And Henderson has also revealed that he hopes to negotiate a new long-term contract at the club in the coming weeks.
Despite the absence of a formal announcement as yet, the Liverpool Echo believes Henderson is widely expected to take over skipper duties next season after playing as captain 15 times for the club this season in Gerrard’s absence.
However, a shadow has been cast over that suggestion with recent reports he and the club have had trouble agreeing new terms with Henderson’s contract set to expire in 2016.
“When Stevie hasn’t been there I just try to do the best I can for the team,” he told the Daily Telegraph via Liverpool Echo.
“I encourage the players, lead by example, and in the summer it’s up to the manager.
“It would be an absolute honour to be captain. I’d love it. At the same time we have a lot of leaders and characters in the group that could do it as well. If it was someone else, I’d be right behind them.”
Henderson’s current contract dispute is eerily similar to Raheem Sterling but despite their continued disagreements with the club on their individual new extended deals.
Henderson himself has already rejected an £80,000 per week deal and a new one hasn’t yet been agreed to or knocked back.
“My agent and Raheem’s agent will be speaking to the club to try to sort something out [in the summer].
“I’ve spoken to Raheem and said: ‘Listen, you just concentrate on your football, that’s the most important thing, and you can get to the summer and then agents and clubs can sort it out then.’
“We’ve still got a lot to play for this season: we want to get in the top four and win the FA Cup. These are a big few months for us. I don’t want any contracts talk to get in the way. We can’t afford that.
“It doesn’t affect my commitment to the club. The contract talk in the press has been going on a long time and if you watched the games I’ve played, I’m sure you’ll realise it hasn’t affected us in the slightest.”
