FA act quickly to charge our powerful defender…

The FA has charged Martin Skrtel for stamping on Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea during Sunday’s Anfield loss, reports the Echo.

He has until 6pm tomorrow to respond to the charge.

With only seconds of the game to run, our feisty centre-back found himself chasing a Mario Balotelli through-ball – but United’s keeper came out to smother it – and the Slovak appeared to plant his foot on his leg – although it could feasibly have been an accident at fast pace.

It’s not yet sure whether we’ll appeal, but with Diego Costa charged for something similar earlier in the campaign – it seems unlikely that we’d be successful even if we did.

If Skrtel does receive a retrospective three game ban – he’ll miss Premier League fixtures with Arsenal and Newcastle and the FA Cup quarter final replay with Blackburn.

Skrtel has shone at the heart of the back-three, and it now remains to be seen whether Rodgers uses either Dejan Lovren (currently injured) or Kolo Toure instead – or whether he mixes up the formation and reverts to a back-four.

UPDATE: the FA have confirmed that Skrtel will indeed face a charge of violent conduct for the incident.
