The injury could all but complete a nightmare season for the 25-year-old, who has already missed five months with a succession of problems. He returned in January, but has still only scored five goals this term.

And now, according to reports in the Daily Mirror, things are set to go from bad to worse for our star striker, who could miss the games against Arsenal, Blackburn Rovers, Newcastle United and Hull City.

Sturridge will join Steven Gerrard, Martin Skrtel and Adam Lallana on the sidelines for the game against the Gunners, leaving Brendan Rodgers with a number of selection headaches.

Dejan Lovren and Kolo Toure will go head-to-head over a place at the back, while Mario Balotelli, Fabio Borini and Rickie Lambert will be anticipating the prospect of making a rare start up front.
