Reina has made just one appearance for the Bundesliga side since his switch, but says he would have had to contend with a similar issue at Anfield if he had remained – with Simon Mignolet our preferred no.1.

The Spaniard spent nine years on Merseyside after signing from Villarreal in 2005, becoming in many people’s eyes, one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

However, following the signing of Mignolet, Reina joined Napoli on a season long loan last year before leaving to join Pep Guardiola’s Bayern outfit last summer – where he plays second fiddle to the world’s very best: Manuel Neuer.

“I think I was not going to play regular football if he had stayed. There’s no time for regrets,” Reina told talkSPORT.

“It’s about looking forward and being happy about what I achieved in my career at Liverpool and have a great day Sunday and say goodbye to all those fans that loved me at Liverpool for many years.

“It’s a great club (Bayern Munich), a good city with good people and we are looking forward to winning every trophy. So far so good. Life could have been better by playing more games but that is a goalkeepers life. I have to be patient and work harder.”

Reina was speaking ahead of his return to Liverpool to take part in Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard’s charity match this Sunday.

The Spaniard will feature along with former Reds favourites including Alvaro Arbeloa, Luis Suarez, Luis Garcia, Harry Kewell and Xabi Alonso.

And he seemed bristling with excitement for the event itself, too: “First of all because it’s a good cause and then to get back and meet some old friends and faces and be part of a great day.”
