And you can’t say he’s wrong…

Brendan Rodgers has conceded that Liverpool likely have too much work to do in our last seven Premier League games to finish in the top four.

The shambolic defeat at Arsenal means we are now seven points off Manchester City in fourth, despite playing a game more, with Man United a point ahead in third and the Gunners nine clear of us in second.

“The reaction and commitment of the players has been first class since (the defeat to Crystal Palace in November),” he said according to Sky Sports.

“Really, up until the Manchester United game we were the form team and playing very, very well.

“But we have been dealt two big blows in these last two games, we haven’t performed how we would like and that has ultimately cost us in terms of the result.

“I very much doubt we will be in the top four now come the end of the season. There’s too much ground to make up – that’s the realistic view from me.

We have to get our heads right, and fast, with the FA Cup quarterfinal replay with Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park coming up this Wednesday and we can’t let there be any hangover from such a disappointing result or for it to affect a potential trophy win.

“Now, we must really focus on the FA Cup and that has got to be very, very important for us,” Rodgers explained to Sky Sports..

There were some suggestions at full-time at the Emirates from fans and pundits alike (mentioned here in the Mirror) that the Raheem Sterling contract situation may have had some negative effect on the club’s preparation for the game and caused us to head to north London under a cloud.

However, the Boss refused to blame such issues saying the team were just simply poor on the day.

“It’s not distractions, we were just poor defensively. You see from our record the last six games we haven’t conceded away from home,” he told Sky Sports.

“It’s just a disappointing day when you concede bad goals, you’re always going to be up against it against a team that’s obviously got good confidence.”
