Both sides will desperate for a victory – the Reds will want to keep any pressure they can upon their rivals for the top four, whilst Newcastle will be becoming slightly nervous that the bottom three are starting to close in on them.

With that in mind, we could well see another classic served up by the two teams.

Here are five games that will live long in the memory of any Reds fans:

April 2013- Newcastle 0-6 Liverpool

Two goals a piece for Jordan Henderson and Daniel Sturridge, as well as one each for Daniel Agger and Fabio Borini helped the Reds to an emphatic win at St James’ Park.

December 2008- Newcastle 1-5 Liverpool

Captain fantastic Steven Gerrard bagged a brace during another rout in the north-east. Sami Hyypia, Ryan Babel, and Xabi Alonso rounded off the scoring. The Reds would go on to finish second, and only four points off the title, whilst the Magpies ended up getting relegated on the final day.

September 2006- Liverpool 2-0 Newcastle

This game will be forever remembered for the outrageous goal scored by Xabi Alonso. The Spaniard struck a wonderful effort from inside his own half. Agonisingly for Newcastle keeper Steve Harper, his slip meant that he could only watch the ball hit the back of the net, and double Liverpool’s advantage after Dirk Kuyt had given them the lead.

March 1997- Liverpool 4-3 Newcastle

The Reds flew into a 3-0 half-time lead, thanks to Steve McManaman, Patrick Berger, and Robbie Fowler. And it appeared that they would comfortably win when Newcastle failed to register a reply with twenty minutes to go. However, goals from Keith Gillespie, Faustino Asprilla, and Warren Barton levelled things up with two minutes to go. Luckily, Fowler was on hand in stoppage time to give Liverpool a narrow win.

April 1996- Liverpool 4-3 Newcastle

Kevin Keegan returned to his old stomping ground needing a win to maintain their push for the title. However, the Reds were on hand to crush their former hero’s dream. But that doesn’t tell the full story of arguably the greatest game in Premier League history.

Robbie Fowler had given Liverpool the lead inside the first two minutes at Anfield, but within twelve minutes they were behind thanks to Les Ferdinand and David Ginola.

Ten minutes into the second-half, Fowler leveled things up. But once again, the Magpies were quickly back in front, after an exquisite finish from Faustino Asprilla.

A brace from Stan Collymore – including a dramatic winner in stoppage time – left Keegan in bits, and their title dream in tatters.
