Should we compete with United for £25m Depay?

Liverpool will pass on the opportunity to sign PSV Eindhoven winger Memphis Depay due to asking price, with the talented attacker instead likely link up with former national team coach Louis van Gaal at Manchester United.

According to the Daily Mirror, we won’t be pursuing interest in the 21-year-old – who has been watched by our scouts for the last eighteen months – after failing to get the Eredivisie leaders to budge from their £25m asking price, which United are reportedly willing to pay.

The Mirror report that van Gaal has used his connections at the Dutch side to help with the deal. He previously worked with Eindhoven’s technical director Marcel Brands at AZ Alkmaar.

Depay has been in inspired form for PSV this season. He has scored nineteen goals in just twenty-six games, and helped his club get within touching distance of clinching their first league crown in seven years.

Whether £25m will turn out to be good or poor value, and whether United (or even us…) will indeed pay it, is another matter entirely, and one we’ll only be able to assess with the benefit of hindsight.

What is certain though, is it’ll be mighty hard to accept losing out on another top target to a big rival.
